Pirates of the Caribbean stays on top, while Cars hangs out at No.6, and A Scanner Darkly sneaks onto the Top 10.
(Source: Box Office Mojo) Put your Pirates-inspired cliché here: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest continues to dominate the megaplexes. The live-action flick added another $62,186,000, bringing its total receipts to $258,205,000. After 2 weeks in theatres, Pirates made more money than Cars made during its 6-week run. Speaking of Cars, that animated movie slipped one spot while still making $7,536,000, bringing its total to $219,697,000. Now that most of the big "event" movies have hit theatres, there's little danger that Cars will leave the Top 10 anytime soon. As I mentioned before, animated "family" films tend to last longer than their live-action counterparts. The big surprise for animation fans was A Scanner Darkly. Richard Linklater's tale of drug-fueled desperation vaulted into the Top 10 after a limited release last weekend, making $1,185,000. Keep in mind that Warner *still* doesn't have much hope for this movie: A Scanner Darkly is making this kind of money at only 216 theatres, up 199 from last week. Memo to Warner Independent Pictures: Hmm, A Scanner Darkly is making good money for being in so few theatres. Wonder what would happen if you put it in wide release? Here's the Top 10 list for last weekend: 1) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (BV): $62,186,000 ($258,205,000 after 2 weeks) 2)Little Man (Sony): $21,700,000 (new) 3) You, Me and Dupree (Uni.): $21,338,000(new) 4) Superman Returns (WB): $11,620,000 ($163,648,000 after 3 weeks) 5) The Devil Wears Prada (Fox): $10,450,000 ($83,554,000 after 3 weeks) 6) Cars (BV): $7,536,000 ($219,697,000 after 6 weeks) 7) Click (Sony): $7,000,000 ($119,702,000 after 4 weeks) 8) The Lake House (WB): $1,570,000 ($48,901,000 after 5 weeks) 9) Nacho Libre (Par.): $1,523,000 ($77,140,000 after 5 weeks) 10) A Scanner Darkly (WIP): $1,185,000 ($1,787,000 after 2 weeks)
