Jib-Jab takes a shot at the modern news media

Jib-Jab's cut-out cartoons are always good for a laugh (or several). And this time, they've taken on the nightly news.

When it comes to having fun with politics (and Americans in general), you can't go wrong with the good folks at Jib-Jab. I especially like the fact that they're skewering all comers, from the Right, Left and Beyond. Much like Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park, they're (to steal Harlan Ellison's memorable phrase) "equal-opportunity opprobriumists."

Now Jib-Jab's taking on the nightly news. As usual, they're using cut-outs of various celebrities to sing a song about the development of cable news (this time sung to "His Truth Is Marching On"). Their point is, as TV news has turned from 3 channels to 3 million, it's become more and more of a tabloid medium. Not surprisingly, I'm getting echoes of Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death here.

Genius stuff, with lines like "Great legends found themselves replaced by blondes with big, fake boobs" over a montage of Walter Cronkite getting yanked and (you guessed it!) taking his place.

I especially enjoyed the line: "Now only 3% can point to Kabul on a map/ But 96% can claim they've seen Brit's putty-tat!" It's funny because it's (painfully) true.
